What does that mean for us?
During the month of February we journey with Jesus. We walk with him and the disciples. We hear the voices of the crowds and sense the hope around us. Jesus is coming. The miracles of healing, of freedom from imprisonment of body and soul, of food to eat and water to drink, of the blessing of God even in and among people who are impoverished and weak and imprisoned. Jesus brings healing. Jesus brings hope.
Transfiguration Sunday, February 19, is a little like a solar flare - the Son of God is made radiant - and that radiance reaches us with the beauty and glory of God. It is a picture of Jesus' resurrection.
The days prior to Lent, when Jesus sets his face toward Jerusalem to go and lay down his life for all, are filled with teaching, miracles, prayers and blessings. The greatest blessing is still to come. It is born in suffering. Our Suffering Savior brings an end to the victory that death holds. The cost is enormous. The love is even greater. This is my blood - shed for YOU for the forgiveness of sin. Remember me.
On Transfiguration Sunday we welcome into membership William and Sharon Butchart by Affirmation of Faith. We also welcome two children to receive Holy Communion for the first time that day: Trenity Groce and Lauren Hoover. May God grant light and blessings to all of God's children throughout their whole lives.
May God's blessings be yours today and in the days ahead!
