BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING
The month of July brings with it celebrations! We celebrate the blessings of living in our nation and the beauty of our country. We remember the bravery of those who have fought to win freedom. We celebrate those who now continue to serve so that we, and others may remain free.
Family reunions pop up in July….in fact, all summer! We find ways to celebrate our roots and those with whom we are connected through families. An interesting observation at a family reunion is family resemblance. We look like our families….some more than others….but those family resemblances are part of who we are. Blue eyes, blonde hair, dark skin, light skin, short, tall…many shared family attributes. We also have similar mannerisms….how we smile, how we may express our thoughts, if we are a fast-walker or have a slower gait. Even preferences or what we love to do can be linked to family….artists, musicians, carpenters, athletes find in their likes and dislikes, their hobbies and life’s work family resemblances.
Certainly, something to celebrate!
We are part of God’s family. In fact, we are described in Scripture as one body…even closer than human family resemblance. We share faith in God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We gather on Sunday mornings for our Faith Family Reunions to worship God who has created us and who is the author of our lives. We share the Thanksgiving meal as we receive Holy Communion at the altar. We share fellowship with each other and delight in each other’s company (and a good cup of coffee & treats). We expect that in this family of Faith we share attributes such as the fruits of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, etc. We also realize that some of the lesser attributes present themselves such as antagonistic remarks or actions toward our sisters and brothers. We are not beyond sibling squabbles. We are humans….in God’s family.
One of our shared beliefs is the recognition that we are blessed! No matter what we have or do not have, there is the underlying sense of God’s blessings even as we encounter difficulties. This allows us to be content in our lives and to pass blessings along to others. We are, after all, blessed to be a blessing.
Thanks be to God! -Deno Sorrels, Associate in Ministry Pastoral Leader |
